THVD4411: THVD4411 RS232/Half-Duplex RS485 Sharing Bus Signals

Hello there,

Several questions in this forum for the THVD4411 have already talked about RS232 and half-duplex RS485 sharing the same bus signals on a connector. I've seen that R1 and R3 should be connected at the THVD4411, and then on the connector we have RS232 TX sharing the bus line with HD-RS485 inverting, RS232 RX sharing the bus line with HD-RS485 non-inverting, and bus ground is common to both modes. There are still some questions I have after reading this forum and the THVD4411 documentation:

  1. Will the THVD4411 survive in RS232 mode if a half-duplex RS485 signal is plugged in by accident assuming the bus lines are shared as written above? Will the half-duplex RS485 down the line survive, assuming it is also compliant with standards?
  2. Will the THVD4411 survive in half-duplex RS485 mode if a RS232 signal is plugged in by accident assuming the bus lines are shared as written above? Will the RS232 device down the line survive, assuming it is also compliant with standards?
  3. The standard for RS232 specifies that receivers must survive +/- 25V, but the abs max for this device shows +/-16V on the bus pins. Will the THVD4411 survive a +/- 25V RS232 signal?
  4. Section 5.12 mode switching characteristics shows timing from shutdown to RS232, RS232 to FD-RS485, FD-RS485 to RS232, FD-RS485 to HD-RS485, HD-RS485 to FD-RS485. Can the THVD4411 go from shutdown to HD-RS485 directly, or would the timing be the sum of the specs for shutdown to RS232 plus RS232 to FD-RS485 plus FD-RS485 to HD-RS485?

    Yes, it will survive assuming that the RS-232 driver and RS-485 driver are not actively driving at the same time. If they are both actively driving, this could cause damage over time.

    R1, R2, and R3 have a max voltage rating of +/-16V. RS-485 operates around the +/-5V range normally, and RS-232 typically operates around 5V to 9V. However, the maximum RS-232 signaling voltage that is a valid is +/-15V, not 25V. 25V is not a required rating, it is just commonly found on most RS-232 receivers as additional protection. So any valid RS-232 signal will still work fine on THVD4411 since 16V is the max. 

    THVD4411 can go from shutdown to RS-485 HD directly. RS-232 mode takes longer to enter since the charge pump capacitors have to ramp up the VCC voltage to the correct threshold.
