SN65HVD11: Over-spec design risks evaluation

Hi team,

My customer is using SN65HVD11DR but mistake use 5V VCC. About the effects of 5V VCC design, want to check with you as below:

  1. About spec effetcs, customers have done a series tests on spec and all specs in 5V VCC are OK for them.
  2. About the lifetime effects, customers suspect that 5V VCC will lead to extra thermal rise. So, if they can control the TJ less than 145C, will 5V VCC still have effects on the lifetime? Any other possible effects?image.png

  • The absolute maximum ratings allow 5 V, so the device will not be permanently damaged. (There are no guarantees about the electrical characteristics.)

    With a 5 V supply, the drive strength might be higher, i.e., signal edges might generate more EMI.

  • Hi Joyce,

    There should be no risk of exceeding the junction temperature with VCC=5V since it does not violate the abs max. However, I would still recommend switching to a properly rated 5V transceiver. Because if they encounter other issues, we cannot support them since they are operating outside of our recommended operating conditions.
