AM26LS31C VS MC3487

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MC3487, AM26LS31C, MC3486, AM26LS31

Dear All,

We have two incremental encoder types with two different driver ICs (AM26LS31C VS MC3487)

Please see below for my explanation of the problem;

1. First Encoder : X Manufacturer and its' driver interface IC is AM26LS31C

2. Second Encoder: Y Manufacturer and its' driver interface IC is MC3487

3. The motor driver encoder receiver side is the same machine for both encoders and the motor receiver IC is MC3486

4. When I plug the encoders to the motor driver.

   - The encoder with MC3487 is working with no error

   - The encoder with AM26LS31C is working for half an hour and then giving some connection errors.

5. I compared propogation delay times of MC3487 and AM26LS31C. The delay times are nearly same except tPZL(Output enable time to low level)  MC3487: 30nsn and AM26LS31C: 37-45nsn. Do you think that this difference make the connection errors.

6. Do you know any major difference between AM26LS31C MC3487. I only found some small difference like below

7. If below explanations is not clear for you Please answer this simple question. Can AM26LS31C driver IC interface to MC3486 receiver IC with no error (Working frequency is : 200-300 kHz)

waiting for your urgent replies

Ertan

  • Please note that I found below explanation from a motorola AM26LS31 datasheet.

"The AM26LS31 provides an enable/disable function common to all four

drivers as opposed to the split enables on the MC3487 EIA–422 driver."

    Can this be my problem

    Best regards

    Ertan

  • Ertan,

The data rate is well within the capabilities of both driver chips. Any RS422 driver can be used for any RS422 receiver. So any combination should work just as well.
Can you provide waveforms during the error?

Does the receiver have load termination resistors installed?
