differential parameter between CAN-FD and CAN tranceiver

Hello,

Could you please let me know the differential parameter in Datasheet between CAN-FD and CAN tranceiver?
I checked SN65HVD265/6/7 as CAN-FD tranceiver.

Then I think that the CAN-FD device has tREC(2Mbps) parameter.
Are there other differences ?

  • Hi Ryuji,

Thank you very much for your question.

The tREC shows the robustness of the transitions from dominant to recessive and recessive to dominant. But this is not the only parameter that is different.

As the speed of the CAN transceivers increasing, all the parameters related to bandwidth, such as the output capacitance, would be optimized. Also as the speed of increasing, the slope of the CAN bus signal would be changed, thus the EMC features need to be controlled. The CAN FD allows longer cable, in this case the propagation delay becomes a critical parameter and this parameters are a little bit different.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hello Vio san,

    Thank you for the reply.
Could you please let me know little more detail about "the EMC features need to be controlled" ?
Is this internal of the device ? Or should we adjust the peripheral device agains faster tr/tf of CAN-FD?

  • Hello Vio san,

    Sorry again.
I compared the SN65HVD265/6/7 datasheet with the SN65HVD255/6/7 datasheet.
As a result, there are the difference tREC only.
There is no difference on tr/tf, input/output capacitance...
Could you please let me know this reason?

    Best Regards,
    Ryuji
  • Hi Ryuji,

Sorry for the late reply. I just see your reply on the recent activities page of the forum but i didn't receive an email and i don't know why.

Something such as "the EMC features need to be controlled" i mentioned just now were the challenge for the IC designers. Since the international standard, ISO11898, has EMC features requirement. While the speed increases, they have to meet the same requirements. These problems have been solved by the IC designers. If you use our CAN FD device, you will probably not encounter the EMC problems if you layout the board properly.

    Hope it helps.
