CAN Driver compatibility

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD231, SN65HVD251

Is that we can operate the SN65HVD231 and SN65HVD251 in compatible mode.Say SN65HVD231 is supplied by 3.3 Volts and SN65HVD251 supplied by 5Volts and both CANH and CANL connected together.

  • Hello Madhu,

5V and 3.3V CAN devices have no problems operating together due to the fact that both drivers produce roughly the same differential voltages on the CAN bus lines. For this reason, a 5V or 3.3V receiver wouldn't even know the difference between a a signal from a 5V driver vs. a 3.3V driver. Also, the common mode of the 3.3V transceiver is biased slightly higher to better match the common mode of the 5V transceiver. Here is a nice app note explaining more about your question: www.ti.com/.../slla337.pdf
