USB Type C Application

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS3220, HD3SS460, TPS65982

My customer is wanting to make sure we have chosen the correct part for his  application. He has  a Type C connector and his design is a UFD. Have MIPI > USB3 data that he needs MUX'd. As well, he has to provide maximum compatibility to Type C hosts AND Type A 3.0 ~ hosts, or legacy cables, as well. . Is HD3SS3220 a good fit for this application. Any other recommendation.

  • Hello Naser,
What do you mean with MIPI? Is it a video interface that you are using? The HD3SS3220 is for Type-C applications without alternate modes (USB only).

    Diego.
  • Hi Diego: Thanks for the responses. i discussed more with customer.

They have a 2 lane mipi output imaging sensor (example Sony IMX241) that they need to stream out the data over USB 3

And they have type C requirements

    They are an UFP

Is there a more ideal part or parts that you'd suggest?

Currently they use an older Cypress part for mipi to USB 3 but were confused on our first round of design by the type c requirements over top of that - They did not use any other ICs or logic to account for the type C

His first thought was to use one of the TI parts to handle type C things like the CC lines and muxing the USB 3 line pairs

But, he has a feeling you're suggesting my mipi data might be able to be handled by one of our chips as well

Does that answer your questions. Let me know if you need further clarification.
  • Hello Naser,

First, the customer should translate the MIPI signal to DP or eDP. Then they can use TPS65982 & HD3SS460 in order to handle the Type-C port with Power delivery & alternate mode (necessary to negotiate the simultaneous DP & USB3 transmission).

    Regards,

    Diego.
