DS92LV3241: Recommended cables

We are interested in connecting a SERDES between a headstage and a motherboard over a length of 1m - 5m. I have seen twisted pair recommended, but I was wondering if there were any other cable types that could be used with a DS92LV3241/DS92LV3242 combination such as coaxial cable. Ideally, we would like the cable to be as flexible as possible and the connectors to be as small as possible. Cat5 + RJ45, for example, would be undesirable as they are large and inflexible. We are open to custom cabling solutions if you have recommendations.

Thank you for reaching out to us. DS92LV3241/DS92LV3242 combination supports quad lane mode and up to 32-bit parallel LVCMOS data. DS92LV3241/DS92LV3242 are designed for dual mode and quad mode SER/DES and required 4 twisted pair cable. If you plan to use a 1m-5m in your application, CATx will still be our recommendation. Other cable selections such as PCI-Express, SATA, Infiniband, DVI, and HDMI cables, they are either larger than CATx or doesn’t support over 1m (SATA).

CAT5 flat shielded cable offers more flexibility and extremely thin/low profile.

Mini-SAS is another choice includes compact and high-speed I/O solution.

It would be good to double-check that the cable is designed for 100-ohm differential characteristic impedance.

Have you considered DS92LV2421/DS92LV2422 in your prototype design? You will need only one shielded twisted pair cable. You don’t need CAT5 cable for DS92LV2421. Here’s the other type I’m thinking of…twin-ax cable:

The good thing about these types of cable is that they can be cut to fit whatever length is needed, so finding a 5m cable should be doable.
