TPS25741: Can this power a 3A circuit at 5V from the USB Bus?

Part Number: TPS25741
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB320

I am designing a product that will implement a USB C receptacle. My requirements are below:

  • Powered by USB Bus (5V) from USB C receptacle
  • Needs to handle 3A of current
  • Needs to support either USB 2.0, 3.0, or 3.1 USB protocols to communicate with the device
  • Different types of cables can be plugged into the device from a PC (A to C, C to C, etc)

I am still learning about USB C protocol and the power delivery specs. From what I can see from the TPS25741 device, this should be able to handle the specs that I need. My major concern is regarding the USB A to C cable from a PC. If I plug in a USB A to C cable from a USB 2.0 port on a PC into this device, will it be able to handle 3A of current?

  • Hi Eric,

I'm currently looking into this and will get back to you asap.

  • Hi Eric,

For clarification, in the power role perspective, is your laptop going to be the source and the device going to be the sink?

The reason why I ask is because the TPS25741 is a source port controller that acts as the DFP. Because of this, the TPS25741 can not be powered by VBUS(5V) through USB C receptacle. The TPS25741 needs to be powered by a power supply brick and then any sink attached can be powered by VBUS(5V).

Also, the TPS25741 only communicates using USB PD 2.0 protocol and never touches the D+/D- lines.

  • Hi Jimmy,

You are correct. The laptop/PC will be the source and the PCB will be the sink. I didn't realize that this was just a source. Do you have a source product that could do this? Or is it even possible?

As for the D+/D- lines, those will be going somewhere else to communicate with devices on the PCB.

    Thanks,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

If you are looking for a sink device, then I'd suggest looking into the TUSB320. It allows different mode configuration of the TUSB320 to be a DFP,UFP, or DRP. The TUSB320 would also satisfy the 3A current requirement.
