SN65HVD35: Bus protection

Part Number: SN65HVD35
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD32

Hi,
I am looking for a TVS diode or chip varistor for bus protection of SN65HVD32.
CDSOT23-SM712(Bourns) is used for protection devices in the data sheet.

Q1.I would like to use the following device, is it possible to use?
Chip varistor EZJZSV800AA(Panasonic)
industrial.panasonic.com/.../chip-
varistor/chip-varistor-2-array-type-signal-lines/EZJZSV800AA

Q2.Are there any other recommendations?

Best regards,
Seishin

  • Seishin,

EZJZSV800AA doesn't look like a good option here, since it has 18V max allowable DC voltage and 80V varistor voltage at 1mA. HVD35 bus pins have abs max -9V and 14V. That means in the range from 14V to 80V the device is not protected. SM712 is a popular choice for RS485 transceivers because it has non-symmetric working voltage from -7 to 12V, which is the operation region of the transceivers. Also its clamp voltages are -10V and 20V, which is about right for HVD35.

    Regards,
