TCAN1051HV-Q1: Electrical Connection of Exposed Pad

Part Number: TCAN1051HV-Q1

Hello,

I do not find any information on how to electrically connect the exposed pad of this CAN transceiver when using the VSON package.

For the best heat dissapation it would be nice to connect the exposed pad to the ground plane, but I do not know to which electrical signal this pad is connected internally.

For other devices as well: Is it a good practice to connect these exposed pads always to ground if there is nothing different spezified in the datasheet?

Thanks for any answers!

  • Hi Tillmann,

thanks for reaching out. I checked our dokumentary and there is no internal electrical connection to the thermal pad. It is just a mechanical connection in order to transfer the heat into the PCB.

    Design tip:
Basically you can connect the Pad to the pane which provides you the best thermal mass to dissipate the heat. I would recommend the GND pane if this is serving this purpose other potentials like Vcc are possible but not recommended.

    Kind regards
    Dierk
