TPD6S300: Difference between TPD6S300 and TVS protection

Part Number: TPD6S300

Hi,

I would like to know what's the difference between TPD6S300 and TVS protection.

Why will we need TPD6S300 if we can simply use TVS to protect?

  • Hi Patty,
TPD6S300 integrates OVP as well as ESD protection, and clamps overvoltage in approx. 70ns. For higher voltage VBUS due to USB PD, the TVS diode required would be high voltage and might not have the necessary low enough clamping voltage to protect CC and SBU pins. This white paper - Circuit Protection for USB Type C – does a great job at explaining the benefits of our integrated protection solution vs. the limitations of a discrete implementation. www.ti.com/.../slyy105.pdf
