TPD4E02B04: Full USB Type-C connector protection 3.1 Gen2

Part Number: TPD4E02B04
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVS0500, TVS2200

Dear *,

1) I come across a schematic where TPD4E02B04 is used for CC1, CC2 and VBUS protection.

Can be TPD4E02B04 used for CC and VBUS lines ?

2)TPD4E02B04  is bidirectional device, what is the difference regarding to a uni-directional device? how to choose what to use

uni or bi directional protection device, is this based on the interface type?

And in your portfolio some USB3 ESD device are uni and some are bi directional, how so?

3) Can be the TPD4E02B04 used for protection of USB2.0 lines  because of Vrwm of 3.6V? What is the voltage of the USB2.0 lines?

4) Does TI has a ESD protection for the VBUS pin or is a standard TVS diode best approach?

Br.

David.

  • Hello,
You cannot use TPD4E02B04 for CCx and VBUS as this device is only for 3.3V signals.
You can use a bidirectional device on a unidirectional line but not the other way around. It is up to you on which device you want to use uni or bi but the TPD4E02B04 has very low capacitance that can support USB3.2 signals.
The TPD4E02B04 can be used on USB2.0 but so can most of the ESD devices in our portfolio.
For a TVS diode for VBUS we have TVS2200 for the 20 V VBUS applications and TVS0500 for the 5V applications.
