SN65176B: Communication Abnormal in EFT Test

Part Number: SN65176B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD08, SN65175, THVD1450

Hi Team,

Customer use SN65176B and found communication abnormal during EFT test.

   1. Ctm used to use SN65HVD08 for years and everything is OK, SCH is as below:

2. When they use SN65176B for P2P replacement, communication abnormal during EFT, as below.

Questions are:

1. Anything need to change in SCH when use SN65176B to improve EFT robust?

2. How is SN65176B's ESD and noise immunity performance? I can see data in SN65HVD08 datasheet but almost see nothing in SN65176B's datasheet.

  • Holly,

SN65175 was not designed with EFT in mind and has not been tested for it on our side. If you wanted to improve its performance at the system level, you might try things like increasing the filtering capacitance values used on the bus lines, using split termination (i.e., divide the 120-Ohm resistance into two series 60-Ohm resistances and place a capacitor to ground at the center node), or use a TVS diode to clamp the voltage excursions on the bus.  However, a simpler solution may be to try a transceiver with better noise immunity. I would recommend THVD1450 for this - it is p2p with HVD08 and has excellent EFT immunity.
