HD3SS215: HDMI certification

Part Number: HD3SS215
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMDS181, , TS3DV642, , TS3DV642EVM

Dear Technical Support Team,

My target is HDMI input x 2ch, however TMDS input of FPGA is x1. So it is necessary to add a switching device between them.

I used TMDS181 for HDMI certification(TDR) before, but did not need the retimer function.

I am considering HD3SS215 or TS3DV642 for SW. Is TMDS181 necessary in this front stage? (TMDS181> HD3SS215 or TS3DV642>FPGA)

Also, does the HD3SS215 or TS3DV642 pass HDMI certification? If you have the documentation, please share it.

I think that you have data to pass HDMI certification(TDR) with HD3SS215EVM and TS3DV642evm.

Best Regards,

The HD3SS215 is a passive switch and it is compliant with HDMI 2.0 signals. The HDMI certification is a verification of the overall system design, not just the HD3SS215.

If using the TMDSD181, I would put the TMDS181 at the output of the HD3SS215.

    Thanks

  • Hi David,

    Thank you for your reply.

    >The HDMI certification is a verification of the overall system design, not just the HD3SS215.

→If overall system such(TDR) is good with only HD3SS215(without TMDS181 ) , Must HDMI certification pass?

Have you ever experience of  pass HDMI certification with only HD3SS215, either TI or other customers?

    >If using the TMDSD181, I would put the TMDS181 at the output of the HD3SS215.

→Does it mean extending cable with TMDS181(retimer)?

        (two input > HD3SS215(2:1) > TMDS181 > FPGA)

       HD3SS215 is  better than TS3DV642 ?

Both the HD3SS215 and the TS3DV642 are suitable for HDMI design. When designing in the HD3SS215 and the TS3DV642, you need to take the MUX Ron, BW, and insertion loss into consideration The TDR is part of the HDMI compliance, but you need to make sure the system can pass every required HDMI compliance tests.

I thought this is a source side design in my first response so I recommended having the TMDS181 at the output of the HD3SS215 or the TS3DV642. For the sink side design, I would recommend having the TMDS181 before the HD3SS215 or the TS3DV642.

    Thanks

  • Hi David,

    Thank you for your reply.

    >For the sink side design, I would recommend having the TMDS181 before the HD3SS215 or the TS3DV642.

→My application is projector and it needs two input from PC. Is it sink side design?

Red circles are position of TMDS181. Is it correct?

I'm sorry to bother you over and over. For example, if eye opening is enough on HDMI connector,

TMDS181 isn't necessary  . However, eye opening isn't enough such as long cable , then TMDS181 is necessary for equalizer . Is it correct?

Yes, the TMDS181 is placed between the sink connector and the HD3SS215 as shown in the block diagram. Please refer to section 9.2.2 Sink Side Application for more details.

    Thanks
