MAX3232E: Icc current under 3.0V

Hi,

My customer met a problem. the Icc current reached to 16mA if power supply is smaller than 3.03V. but once beyond this voltage, the Icc current is normal. would you please suggest what may go wrong?

BTW, power supply directly power MAX3232E, other circuit is disconnected.

Hi,

Unfortunately this is true behavior of the device. When the supply is too low (<3.0V), the charge pump of MAX3232E keeps charging that draws lots of Icc current. When Vcc reaches the recommended level, the output voltage is above 5V and the charge pump only turns on when it's necessary.

Thanks for reply. Where can I find related description and test report? customer would like to dig into this issue. because their power supply is close to 3.0V, According to your comments, They do can observe duty circle change at charge pump pin when power supply change. they want to know, From long term perspective, if charge pump has to works under this manner, if there is a potential risk.

There is no reliability concerns if the Vcc is close to 3.0V. I sent you some lab data by email.
