SN75ALS191: SPDIF and AES/EBU signal path

Part Number: SN75ALS191
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DIT4192, THVD1550

Hello experts,

My customer plan to make two signal path (SPDIF and AES/EBU) by using SN75ALS191 from DIT4192.
If we select correct termination(SPDIF:75ohms, AES/EBU:110ohms), can we use SN75ALS191 for this use case?
If you have more suitable line driver and the points which we should take care, could you give me advice?

Thanks and best regards,
Ryo Akashi
  • Ryo,

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with the audio terminology. It looks like AES/EBU is basically RS-422 signaling. If so, SN75ALS191 should work.

Is SPDIF single-ended TTL logic? What's the requirement about the RS-485/422 transceiver, like data rate, common mode range? The latest TI parts can be found in this e2e post.

    Regards,

  • Hello Hao-san,

Thank you for your reply and I'm sorry for my late reply.
I understand SN75ALS191 might work for AES/EBU signal line.
If customer plan to use line driver for only AES/EBU, is there any other recommended RS422 based transceiver IC?
SN75ALS191 is best part for AES/EBU signal path?

I would appreciate if you would give me advice.

    Thanks and best regards,

  • Akashi-san,

Looking at the SN75ALS191's datasheet, I think the key specifications are: 5V supply, 20Mbps data rate, 2V Vod @ 100Ohm load (again I'm not sure if AES/EBU has other requirement like EMC/EMI). Given these spec, THVD1550 could be used to replace SN75ALS191. THVD1550 works with 50Mbps and +/-15V common mode range, and has integrated updated ESD protection. However it would be better to know the system requirement for recommending the device.
