TCA9800: error mode

Part Number: TCA9800

Hi team,

My customer is evaluating the TCA9800. Could you please advise for the question below?

Are there any cases where the Bch side does not work properly in the error mode of the TCA9800DGK?
(Switching the direction from Ach to Bch to Bch to Ach may not work properly if this happens, or it may not work properly if the power supply goes down and up in this state, etc.)

(Background)

I2C communication failure occurred in the customer's internal examination and the cause is being analyzed, but the problem cannot be reproduced and the cause analysis is difficult. We have cited foreign matter on the board as the probable cause, the I2C line shorting to GND, and the malfunction of the I2C level shifter. I asked a question because I would like to refer to it if there is any information about the malfunction of the I2C level shifter.

Regards,

Yamaguchi

  • Yamaguchi-san,

Thanks for reaching out. The TCA9800 uses a current sensing mechanism to determine when the B-side is being pulled low. One important design consideration is to ensure that the IEXT-I and IEXT-O restrictions are not being violated. Please take a look at section 9.4.1.2 of the TCA9800 datasheet to see about this.

As far as "error mode," there is not an error mode of the TCA9800. Please let me know if I misunderstand the meaning of your question here.

    Best,
