HD3SS3202: USB 3.0 Muxing

Part Number: HD3SS3202

Hello,

Is a high speed differential mux required for a USB 3.0 interface through type c connector? The alternative would be shorting the two channels. I have see different opinions on this, some saying that it is required for signal integrity due to the creation of a stub and others saying this is not an issue with careful layout. For system cost and board space it would be ideal to not utilize a mux. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thank you!

Regards,

Garret

  • Hi Garret,

I would recommend utilizing a high speed mux on the TX1/2 and RX1/2 pins of the USB-C connector. this is common design practice for USB-C designs. This will allow for better signal integrity than shorting these pin and would prevent interop issues as TX1/2 and RX1/2 pins can be repurposed for things besides USB data. USB 2 data pins (DP & DM) can short together, conserving polarity, since the SI issues are less of a concern and DP and DM are not repurposed for other types of data.
