ESD protection device for Gigabit Ethernet application

Hi Team,

Could you please tell me the recommended ESD protection device for GbE application ?

Our customer is considering TPD4E001, however, I believe this device supports up to only USB2.0 (480Mbps).

I have another question.
How should we understand the supporting data rate for each device ?

    Kawai,

    TPD4E001 is the correct device for GbE. The -3 dB cutoff frequency is  1/(2*pi*R*C) = 2.7 Ghz for a 50 ohm system and 1.5 pF. 1Gbps equates to 500 MHz data rate for two logic levels (0 & 1), but since there are five logic levels the data can be passed at a much lower frequency around which there is much debate about what is the fundamental frequency. I say, if one cycle can pass 5 bits, then the fundamental frequency is Gbps/(logic levels) = 200 MHz.

    In any case, TPD4E001 has been used to protect Ethernet (between the magnetics and PHYS) successfully many times.

    Also, I recommend TPD4E1U06 for this application. It has lower capacitance and better ESD performance, same pinout without the need for VCC applied.

    We are using the TPD3E001 for ESD protection of USB signal pairs. 

    Now we want to use the part for ESD protection of Gigabit Ethernet pairs.

    However the ethernet circuit is a passive PoE injector with only 12 V available as VCC.

    Do we need to connect to VCC or can we leave it floating?

    I have made a sketch based on the logic block diagram from p. 2 of the datasheet.
