TPD1E10B06: How to understand the current rating per IEC 61000-4-2 requirement?

I am looking to select a TVS to pass IEC 61000-4-2 ESD test.

The TPD1E10B06 can pass IEC 61000-4-2 level 4 test at +/- 30KV contact and air-gap discharge. Section 6.1 also specifies "IPP Peak pulse current (tp = 8/20us) = 6A". But from a TI ESD design paper, the peak current at 8KV can be 30A (see red line in below picture. Paper: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/slyt492/slyt492.pdf

How to understand the current rating per IEC 61000-4-2 ESD test? If I use TPD1E10B06 in my design to do the ESD test at +/- 8KV, will the ESD gun generate +/- 8KV with 30A peak current as shown by the red line? If true, the TPD1E10B06 can be damaged because of this huge current although the voltage is only +/- 8KV.

Hi Shiwei,

Thanks for reaching out. The 6A Ipp rating for the TPD1E10B06 is actually referencing an 8/20us pulse more commonly known as surge. IEC 61000-4-5 surge is a transient that rises to 90% of its peak in 8us and decays to 50% in 20us. This is actually completely different than the IEC 61000-4-2 ESD pulse you refer to in your plot which doesn't last more than ~200ns.

The TPD1E10B06 is rated for 30kV/30kV so it will have no issue handling an 8kV ESD strike along with the 30A peak current because that peak current is referring to the IEC 61000-4-2 pulse. The 6A Ipp rating is referring to the IEC 61000-4-5 pulse. From what it sounds like, you are designing your system to survive ESD so the TPD1E10B06 should be sufficient.

TPD1E10B06 is specified to meet "IEC 61000-4-2 level 4 ESD Protection" in datasheet, does it mean it will pass the "30A peak current" in IEC9100-4-2 level 4, although this number "30A" is not explicitly specified in datasheet?
