DS90UB953-Q1: Cable type recommended for FPD link with cable length up to 1.5m

Part Number: DS90UB953-Q1

Dear experts,

Customer is reviewing DS90UB953/954 for FPD link for MIPI Camera interface. The distance from AP to Camera is in the range of 30cm ~1.5m.

In this case, what kind of cable can we recommend for this application ?  Only coax cable can be used for FPD link ?

Thanks,

JH.

  • Hello JH,

You can use either single-ended coax or shielded-twisted pair (STP) for the FPD link between the DS90UB953 and 954. See section 7.1 and register 0x03 in the DS90UB953 datasheet.

  • Hello,

what do you mean by AP?

generally, for FPD-Link you can use either Coax or STP/STQ cables.

  • Hi Hamzeh,

    Thanks for answer.

AP means Application Processor to receive 954 data as below.

    Cam --> 953(Ser) --> connection cable --> 954(Des) --> AP

One more question,  Is it possible to use FPCB(flexible PCB) for connection between 953 and 954 instead of coax, STP/STQ ?

    Thanks,

    JH..

  • Hi Hamzeh,
    One more question from customer.
In case of coax, Is there limitation of cable diameter ?
They have 0.64~0.8pi of coax. Is this okay to be used ?
What is feasible max length of coax cable ?
    Thanks,
    JH.
  • Hello JH.

They can use FPCB instead of Coax or STP. But they have to make sure that they do not have EMC/EMI issues. You know the cable has always shielding but the FPCB not! Also the traces on the FPCB should be 50 ohm for Single ended and 100 ohm for differential pairs.

There is no limitation for cable diameter for FPD-Link itself, but this may affect the max. PoC and increase the cable loss.

We do not specify max. length of a cable since there are different manufacturers and cable types. What we specify is the maximum allowed insertion loss and return loss on the link.
