TPS65988: Port 1 ends up to HARD reset in UFP mode after sending good crc to source capabilities

Hi,

I have issue with a port 1. Port 0 works in UFP,DFP, DRP mode. Port 1 does not work in UFP or DRP (try.snk) when connected to DFP. I have checked that all configurations should be similar between ports 0 and 1.

What happens is that after DFP advertises source capabilities and port 1 sends goodcrc there is HARD reset in PD trace. I have checked that PD message timings and content are similar between port 0 and port 1 before HARD reset. Port 1 ends up to HARD reset (initiated by DFP or UFP hard to say). UFP (port 1) also continue to send request message even after HARD reset.

I suspect that there must be firmware issue from two reasons:

1. Hard reset happens every time and with different DFPs. It always happen after goodcrc to advertised source capabilities.

2. Port 1 continue to send request message even after HARD reset seen on bus.

Is this known issue and is there fix for FW available? Or is there other possible reasons than FW?

Hi Tatu,

I would suggest loading the recovery image onto your EVM. You can do so by selecting Device --> Re-Flash EVM Firmware (Recovery) and then selecting TPS65988EVM. We have never been able to reproduce this behavior with a known good EVM.

Hi,

On the left I have connected to port in our system. I can see VBusState_OVP_UVP. On the port I can't see that and PD contract succeeds. Can we suspect some kind of voltage issue or when exactly OVP_UVP state is reached?

Hi Tatu,

Yes, the VBUS State OVP/UVP is indicative of a voltage error on VBUS. I would suggest measuring VBUS with an Oscilliscope to see if you can see any anomalies with the VBUS voltage.

VBUS looks good. Any other suggestions that we could try to do to debug and solve this issue?

BTW we are mainly connecting tps65982 as a DFP to this failing device. So we could debug it to see why it decided to make hard reset (how should we do it?) We see hard reset also when connecting for example laptop and other devices....

Can you show me a scope capture that includes VBUS, CC, and VBUS current? This should help indicate where the issue lies.
