Hi,

I have a Macbook Pro with 4 ports that supports all features. I fully understand that is a rather complex build, but my main problem is not that I don't have enough fully featured ports. It's rather that when you hook up SD card readers, webcams, external mouse and such, you run out of ports alltogether.

I've done an implementation of TUSB8041A with HD3SS3220 on the ports that work well at high speeds. Is there anything obvious I'm missing that prevents us from making a hub that has 1 UFP and 4 DFP - using offering Type C connectors? I understand that adding full PD to 4 ports might require a 400W power supply and that if all ports should support Alt mode, it will cost a fortune, but I'm thinking of just a hub for data.

Hi Jens,

From the USB hub standpoint, this is fine as long as it is clear that the hub doesn't support any kind of dual role implementation. The upstream port of the hub is always upstream and the downstream ports of the hub are always downstream.

Adding another TI engineer to comment on the HD3SS3220.

it should work only need USB data with TUSB8041 and HD3SS3220.. HD3SS3220 here is used only for cable orientation and mux control. You also need MCU to control ID and Vbus switch.

Ok. thanks Brian. I understand that I'll need a VBUS chip also, but why would I need an MCU to control ID? I mean - the hub will have it's own ID, right?
