TPS65983: Thunderbolt3 Daisy Chain FAIL

Part Number: TPS65983

Hello,

The design is a thunderbolt3 product and follows Intel Apex Creek reference design.

There are 2 type c port on the board, and HOST PC can recognize separately through TB3 cable.

But cannot link them together in Daisy-Chain config like the attachment. Intel confirmed their reference design support Daisy-Chain.

Is this limitation due to TPS65983 schematics? Or firmware?

  • Hello,

    Welcome to E2E world.

Let me ask you a few question which will help me

    1. Where did you get the Intel Apex Creek reference design? Please make sure to ask Intel sales representative for the reference design.

    2. Have you ever made any changes from Intel reference design?

If you copied exactly  the Intel reference design, the firmware for TPS65983 should work.

I hope it helps and solves your problem, PLEASE select  This resolved my issue

    Best Regards,

    Hao

  • Dear Hao,

The Intel Apex Creek reference design came from intel FAE,and my design schematics has been checked by them, they said my design can support Daisy-Chain.
My design has not changed compared with the reference design, except the TI firmware.
And the FW was achieved with the TPS65983 Application Customization 3_16 tool,I only choose the following options:
    1. Apex Creek
    2. PD3 and PD2
    3. No charging
The others are the default options.

But my cards cannot link together in Daisy-Chain config.
  • Hi,

Are you using TPS65983B or TPS65983 now? Can you take a screenshot?

    Best Regards,
    Hao
  • Hi Tao,

We will help review the schematic and see if all is correct. Since it's the thunderbolt design, please double check with your Intel representative, because Intel offers the reference design which must be copied exactly by every designer.

    Best Regards,

    Hao

  • Hi Tao,
The schematic about TPS65983B seems to be correct, it's strange that it cannot work in Daisy-Chain configuration if Intel confirms their support for Daisy-Chain. I would suggest talking to your Intel representative to double check with it.
    Best Regards,
    Hao
