Digital isolator for CAN bus

Hi,

Good Day.

When is a digital isolator needed for a board-to-board CAN bus? And why are they needed just when PCBs adopt different CAN transmitters?

>>> I found an application report with regarding to this query (https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slla486a/slla486a.pdf?)

How about other types of a bus are the same? For some time, if this applies for example to LVDS bus?

Please advise. Thank you very much.

Best Regards,

Ray Vincent

  • Hi Ray,

    Thanks for reaching out.

For a CAN Bus, isolation is typically needed for the following reasons:

-To protect low voltage equipment and humans from high voltage surges

-To tolerate large ground potential difference and disruptive ground loops in circuits that have high energy or are separated by a large distance

For most communication interfaces, isolation is also needed for these reasons.

    Regards,

    Kenneth
