[FAQ] ISO1640: Why are the maximum load capacitance and load current ratings for Side 1 of the ISO1640/ISO1641 less than Side 2?

Part Number: ISO1640
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1641

Why are the maximum load capacitance and load current ratings for Side 1 of the ISO1640/ISO1641 less than Side 2?

  • The ISO164x is designed to isolate one I2C node from the rest of the I2C bus. As a result, it has been designed such that Side 1 of the device is to be connected only to one node, while Side 2 is designed to be connected to multiple nodes. Since this is the case, Side 1 has a sufficient load current and load capacitance rating for only one device, while Side 2 has much higher load current and capacitance ratings to support multiple nodes.
