Transformer driver for High Power load

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN6501, SN6507

I'm looking for a way to implement a Transformer Driver into my design. The main issue here is the voltage and amperage requirements. The driver is meant to isolate a 57 V voltage rail and drive a current of 2.5 A.

Something like SN6501QDBVRQ1, that I have already implemented into the design would be the thing I'm looking for, but of course, according to the aforementioned specifications.

Best regards,

Anibal

  • Hi Anibal,

Thanks for reaching out and for sharing your requirements.

We three different parts in our transformer driver portfolio, SN6501, SN6505 and SN6507. None of these parts will be able to support your requirement by themselves as your voltage and current requirements are higher than what the devices are rated for.

However, you can increase the voltage and current capabilities by using external components. Please refer to the below schematic which adds external MOSFETs and an LDO to increase voltage and current rating of the overall solution. Let me know if this works for you, thanks.

  • Hello Mr Rao,

    Thanks for the reply.

What I meant when I said that I've already implemented SN6501, is that I'm using it for an isolated CAN interface. I'm pleased with the simplicity of the circuitry and I wonder, is there in TI's portfolio anything that works in a similar way, that could be used for higher power applications?

Regarding the circuitry you posted: I have I understood correctly, that all of the current passes through the SN6505's D1 and D2? Will it not saturate? The switching current for those pins is under 0.5 A.

Ideally, the IC should operate the gates of the MOSFETs, that way all of the current would pass through them and not the IC.

  • Hi Anibal,

Sorry, I actually meant to share the below schematic and not the one shared in my previous response. The below schematic using external MOSFETs with SN6505 or SN6507 should support your application requirements.

Please note that SN650x is the only family we have for isolating power with external transformer. There maybe other product groups who may have other solutions that meet your requirement. I recommend you to post this question at the below forum and the respective team members might suggestive alternative solutions that you could consider. Let me know if you have any other questions, thanks.
