ISO1500: ISO1500

Part Number: ISO1500
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1540, ISO1640

I am looking for a device smaller than the ISO1540 to isolate my I2C lines.  Will the ISO1500 work for I2C Communications?

  • Hi Luke,

    Thanks for reaching out.

The smallest package size that we have for I2C isolation is the "D" package (SOIC-8), which is availible for both the ISO1540 and ISO1640B (the version of the ISO1640 that is only qualified for basic isolation). We don't have any packages smaller than this availible for I2C isolation.

Will the ISO1500 work for I2C Communications?

No, the ISO1500 will not work for I2C communications and cannot be used to isolate I2C signals. ISO1500 is designed to isolated an RS-485 bus, which uses a specific differential signaling interface for communications. I2C uses a typical 0-5 V logic signals for communication, and as a result the ISO1500 will not be able to effectively read these types of signals. Therefore, you cannot use the ISO1500 to isolate an I2C interface.

Additionally, I would also like to point out that the ISO1640BDR and the ISO1500DBQR both come in packages that have a similar area (4.90 mm × 3.91 mm for the ISO1640BDR and 4.90 mm × 3.90 mm for the ISO1500DBQR). If your goal is to use an I2C isolator that is qualified for basic isolation and has a package size similar to the ISO1500, then I think you should be able to go ahead and use ISO1640BDR for your application, since it is close to meeting both of these requirements.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

    Regards,

    Kenneth
