I'm wondering whether to use an isolated CAN transceiver or not. A few of the nodes in the vehicle use a TI ISO1050 which has an isolated power supply and run GND and 5 V with CAN-Low and CAN-High signals so they have a common ground. I wanted to use a TI SN65HVD232 because of the reduced package size and no need for an isolated power supply.

I'm unsure if I should use an isolated transceiver like the ISO1050 or not. Will I run into problems if I don't use an isolated transceiver. If they can be used together, how should the CAN-Ground be connected?

Hello Jeff,

Thank you for reaching out. An isolated transceiver is recommended to protect the Logic/MCU side of a transceiver from GND shifts on the field side of the isolator. For example, in CAN applications the GND potential of the CAN bus can shift over the network and created a large Ground Potential Difference that can interfere with communications or create a risk of electrical shock. You can also use an isolated transceiver with integrated power (ISOW1042) if board space is a concern.

An Isolated CAN node can be used with a non-isolated node. The isolated power and ground nodes should not be connected to the CAN side power and ground in anyway in order to have full isolation performance. If they are connected, the application would continue to work but the isolator would act as a non-isolated transceiver.
