ISO1640: Use of ISO1640 as an IS-to-Non-IS Isolator

Part Number: ISO1640
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO7041, ISO7021

Tool/software:

Hello,

I was wondering if ISO1640 is suitable for use as an IS-to-Non-IS isolator.

if not, then does TI offer another solution?

  • Hi Muhammad,

ISO1640 has not be certified for Ex applications (IECEx or ATEX).

We have only 2 devices ISO7021 and ISO7041 that are certified according to IECEx and ATEX but currently they can only be used in IS-to-IS applications. Once the new revision of EN 60079-11 is adopted, then there is a possibility that these devices can be used in IS-to-Non-IS applications but that's not expected till the end of 2025.

    Thanks,
    Saleem Marwat

  • Hi Saleem,

    Thanks for your quick response.

Are we saying that it may be possible to use ISO1640 as an IS-to-Non-IS barrier as it complies with IEC 60664-1, provided that the draft Edition 7 of the standard is approved?

Or are we saying that it may be possible to use ISO7021 and ISO7041 as IS-to-Non-IS barriers if the draft Edition 7 of the standard is approved?

  • Hi Muhammad,

It's the latter. I am saying that it may be possible to use ISO7021 and ISO7041 as IS-to-Non-IS barriers once the new Edition of the EN standard is approved and we recertify these 2 devices.

There is no plan to certify ISO1640 for Ex applications.

    Thanks,
    Saleem

  • Hi Saleem,

Thanks for the clarification. Do TI offer any app note or other devices that can help with designing an IS-to-Non-IS barriers for I2C bus?

  • Hi Muhammad,

You can review my app note on Ex products at: https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slla480

As I mentioned earlier, please note that we currently don't have any solution for IS-to-Non-IS applications.

    Thanks,
    Saleem
