ISO1044: Isolated CAN repeater

Tool/software:

Hi,

We are using CAN communication as the system bus communication, and we are currently looking for a CAN device. We have an AM335x mounted on a custom board.

The DCAN module of the AM335x is equipped with CANH and CANL terminals, so CAN communication is possible without the intervention of any special device.

In addition, since the unit equipped with the AM335x may be inserted and removed, we are considering isolating the CAN communication.

As far as TI's isolated CAN transceiver is concerned, the connection on the controller side is made between the RXD and TCD terminals, so it cannot be connected to the CAN terminal of the AM335X.

Ideally, we are looking for a device like an isolated CAN repeater, but are there any products that you can suggest with a structure like CAN<--isolated-->CAN?

Are digital isolators such as ISO7721 applicable? Please tell us the recommended product model number.

Thanks,

Conor

  • Hello Connor,

First to answer your question directly, we do not have any isolated CAN repeaters or devices that match this function at this time. A digital isolator cannot be used to drive a CAN bus since the CANH and CANL signal requirements and design are different typical digital outputs.

I took a look at the AM335X datasheet, and these controllers feature pins that allow for easy CAN integration. These pins cannot be used to drive a CAN bus directly and a CAN transceiver is needed for this purpose.  ISO1044 would be a good part for this application because it will provide protection form GND transients.

I would recommend creating a thread with AM3352 in the title to confirm my comments with the microcontrollers team. Let me know if you have further questions.

    Best,
    Andrew
