SN6505B: Can SN6505B be used to convert 5V to 24V?

Part Number: SN6505B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN6507

Tool/software:

Hello,

I need an isolated 24VDC power supply (50mA minimum) that is generated from the 5VDC.

Can I use a SN6505B with a transformer flipped 180°: 750319694 or 750317828 or 750316856?
If yes, do I need to use a LDO regulator (24V out) after the transformer?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

  • Hello Rob,

Thank you for reaching out. Yes, you can use SN6505B to convert 5V to 24V. In general, the SN6507 will work with most transformers as long as the transformer meets the VT-product minimum specified in the datasheet.

Please note that SN6505 has a recommended D1, D2 current of 1A. This means that the total power that the transformer driver can support is ~5W. A 44V output would have 200mA output.

I don't see an issue with flipping a transformer, however, please check with the manufacturer to be sure.

    Best,
    Andrew

  • Ok, thanks.
Is it necessary to use an LDO regulator (24V output) after the transformer? If I don't use one, I will have too much noise at the output?

  • Hello Rob,

The LDO is optional. It is okay to use and LDO at the output if you deem the output to be too noisy for your application.
