ISO1042: How to select CAN Bus Shield termination R and C

Part Number: ISO1042
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: STRIKE

Tool/software:

Hi,

I am using ISO1042 Isolated CAN Transceiver chip with a shielded cable.

The cable length is 30m approx. The shield (drain) wire of cable is connected to the Earth via R/C combination network.

Q : What is the purpose of this R and C ?

Q : How the values of R and C is selected ?

I want to apply Surge 1kV (IEC 41000-4-5) on the shield of the cable so, how to select these R and C ?

  • Hello Prasad,

    Thank you for reaching out.

    1. Q: What is the purpose of this R and C?
      1. Typically, it is better to have a low impedance connection from the cable shield directly to earth ground for surge applications.
      2. Sometimes an R and C are used for EMI filtering. However, this will limit the shields capability to dissipate the surge strike.
    2. Q: How is the values of R and C selected?
      1. If you still choose to use an R and C, they should ideally be rated for surge strikes up to 1kV

    Best,
    Andrew
