Hi, TI Experts,

I would like to refer to this link (ISO7641FM: 6000V Vpk test failed in customer test - Isolation forum - Isolation - TI E2E support forums) to perform tests on the digital isolator ISO7641 and several other isolator models that I have. However, I am not sure what source impedance should be selected for the test (2 Ω? 10 Ω? or some other value?). Could you please help me review this, especially with regard to the isolator model ISO7461?

Thanks in advance.

BR,

Steven.

  • Hi Steven,

    Thanks for reaching out.

The test described in the post you have linked is a Surge test for the isolation barrier. Since surge tests are typically performed across the isolation barrier, source impedance is not required. The Surge tests are conducted using the two terminal method, in which all right side pins are connected and all left side pins are connected forming two terminals. Because this test is performed to measure the surge performance of the isolation barrier, no source impedance is required.

  • Hi, Aaditya V

Many thanks for your quick response.

I'm not quite sure if what you're referring to as “source impedance is not required” here is the source impedance of the chip or the surge device. We discussed with the manufacturer of the surge equipment and they said that the surge generator must have a source impedance configuration.

If possible, could you please provide a device model and configuration that can perform this test? And the reference standards for this test. What I referred to before was https://www.ti.com/lit/wp/slyy063/slyy063.pdf .The description in this literature does not mention specific test models and configurations.

    Steven

  • Hi Steven,

    Thanks for your response.

Sorry, I realized my wording and clarity of my previous reply was not good.

I meant to say that the surge test on the isolation barrier is not dependent on the source impedance. So if the surge tester is set to 2-ohm or some other value, the results of testing the performance of the isolation barrier would remain the same.

  • Hi, Aaditya V

Great to hear that. The information is very important to us.

    Many thanks for your help.
