ISO7242C: Issue with Isolator/Transceiver Circuit

Hi Experts,

Customer is using ISO7242CDWR for isolating UART connections which are then connected to a RS232 transceiver.

One specific board has some issue communicating at higher baud rate 921600. What can be the possible issue for such cases? Since the issue is board specific, need any potential causes that can lead to such cases. Garbage values are seen when seen at 921600. Works fine till 460800 rate.

Transceiver circuit seems fine. Is there anything to be checked for ISO7242? What can be the possible cause of garbage data thrown up? It works fine at lower baud rate.

  • The isolator supports up to 25000000 baud.

    Check the signal quality of the RS-232 signals, and the frequency accuracy of UART's clock.

    As Clemens stated, the data rates you are running for your system should be fine with our isolator. One thing you can do is check the functionality of the isolator by taking the input and output waveform of the signal. If the output signal matches the input signal (of each channel), then it means the isolator is functioning normally. 

    Since the issue you are experiencing is still being debugged, you can also check the signal source on the board and compare it with the input pin signal on the isolator. This can give an idea of the isolator is causing any issues for your system. 

    The isolator simply takes in a signal from the input and passes it to the output pin with no alteration. So if a inaccurate signal is applied at the input, then the isolator will also output the same inaccurate signal as well. So any major changes between input and output can be noted as a disturbance. This also goes hand-in-hand with Clemens's statement in terms of checking the other parts of the signals and system to check if the signal is changing at any other point.

    If you believe the isolator device is causing any issues, feel free to attach measured waveforms (showing input, output) along with a system schematic (showing MCU, isolator, and transceiver, etc).
