ISO7741: shielding isolation

Part Number: ISO7741
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO6441, ISO6741

Tool/software:

Hi team,

Referring to the TLP554 optocoupler, which has the following shielding isolation, I would like to confirm whether the ISO774* Isolator has similar shielding isolation. Thank you.

A Faraday shield integrated on the photodetector chip reduces the effects of capacitive coupling between the input LED emitter and the high gain stages of the detector.

Thanks

  • Hi Lillian,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Digital isolators, like the ISO7741, function completely different from optocouplers. Digital isolators do not have any optical components internally, rather use OOK modulation to transfer signals between the input and output side of the isolator. By not having any optical components, the signal integrity, accuracy, and reliability are greatly enhanced. Additionally, TI isolation devices use TI's SiO2 dielectric material which provides a strong dielectric strength, resulting in more robust isolation. More information on how digital isolators are different can be found here: Improve Your System Performance by Replacing Optocouplers with Digital Isolators (Rev. C)

If you are looking for a 4 channel digital isolator such as the ISO7741 (3 forward, 1 reverse channel), please also consider the below digital isolators. There are also different 4 channel configurations available on the product pages:

In Addition to digital isolators, TI also offers an optocoupler replacement, called opto-emulators: https://www.ti.com/isolation/opto-emulators/overview.html. These devices are pin-to-pin compatible to optocouplers and emulate the function as well. The main benefit of opto-emulators is that do not have any optical components and also utilize TI's SiO2 dielectric material to provide significantly better reliability, signal integrity and accuracy, and longer life time.
