What is the maximum input clamping current of the isolator ISO6742? 

Besides, why are there two sets of input clamping diodes on each input? What is the functionality of the second set?

  • The clamping current limit is not specified. Assume something small, less than 1 mA.

    When an ESD event happens, the forward voltage of the first diode is equal to the forward voltage of the second diode plus the voltage drop over the resistor, so the first diode can shunt away a large current while the second diode clamps the voltage to a much smaller value. Anyway, the actual implementation is likely to use a single set of diodes, connected along the resistor. (A diode is just a P/N junction; you can simply increase its width to match the resistor's length.)
