ISO1044: Shared isolated supply for multiple ISO1044 nodes on CAN bus

Part Number: ISO1044

Tool/software:

Hello TI team,

I am designing a CAN bus up to 100 m with about 10 nodes at different locations. Each node has its own local power supply.

I plan to use ISO1044 isolated CAN transceivers. To simplify the design, I would like all ISO1044 devices to share a common isolated VCC2, instead of adding a separate isolated DC/DC converter for each node.

Is this approach acceptable for reliable operation, and are there any risks or drawbacks I should consider?

Thank you for your guidance.

  • Hello Igor,

Thank you for reaching out. In general, it okay to send use a common isolated supply to power VCC2 as long as each VCC2 has 5V the system should be able to function normally.

Typically, each node has its own DC/DC converter (powered from the VCC1 side) in order to limit the amount of wire that is in the system. There is also the added benefit that each node will have a local GND2 loop. This reduces the possibility of a ground shift over the 24V power supply connections.

    Best,
    Andrew
