SN6505A-Q1: transformer inductance selection

Part Number: SN6505A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN6505B-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi Expert,

SN6505A-Q1 is used to drive 3:8 transformer to convert 5V to 12V. The load current is 300mA. How to select transformance inductance so that there is no risk of inductance saturation?

SN6505A-Q1 is 160khz and SN6505B-Q1 is 420kHz. Does the frequency have the influence? Whether need to limit the max inductance of transformer?

  • Hi Beida,

One of the key factors to consider while designing SN6505 based solution is the transformer design.

There is not a minimum or maximum requirement for primary-side inductance for transformers in SN650x systems: the functional requirements are covered by V-t product and turns ratio parameters. The transformer needs to meet the minimum Vxt product  and the minimum turns-ratio.

Section 9.2.2 of SN6505 datasheet describes the detailed design procedure that includes selection of LDO, diodes and transformer. It also lists many example transformers that can be used with SN6505.

Below are the transformers recommended in datasheet for 5V to 12/15V output.

Customer can also use a software tool from SN6505 product page to design their transformer. I have provided below the direct link to this tool. Thanks.
