ISO1044: can we expect a better EMC emission than TCAN3404

Part Number: ISO1044
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN3404

Tool/software:

We have a special application that link 3 MCU with CAN bus.  2 MCUs are on the same PCB( 2" by 2"), the other one is on a separate PCA only 3" away connected by a short cable. design requires low noise.

option 1,  the transceiver use ISO1044.

Ground is shared. 5V DC is provided by a dedicated LDO( share same ground).

option 2,

use single 3.3V power transceiver, TCAN3404.

share ground, share 3.3V power by a dedicated LDO.

from the noise point of view. is it reasonable to assume the isolate chip will generate less noise to the system?  I think the difference is ignorable because the ground are shared.

  • Hi David,

This is a good question. The short answer is that adding an isolator will not improve the EMC performance of the system if isolation is not needed. However, if is isolation is needed in the application, then using ISO1044 would be the preferred choice compared to TCAN3404 with a digital isolator since it would decrease the number of components in the design thereby improving EMC.

  • Hi Andrew,

Thank you very much for prompt response, the answer make me more confident about my assumption. in out application, the difference should be trivial if designed properly.
