ISO1044: Common isolated power supply for 2 different CAN ICs

Part Number: ISO1044

Tool/software:

Hello,

The host MCU needs to communicate with 2 external CAN devices. These devices will NOT be on the same CAN bus. They will be on different bus that talks to the host MCU using two different CAN peripherals of the host MCU.

I want to know if we can power the isolated side of both ISO1044 with a single isolated power supply as shown in the image below. Or is it necessary to have a different power supply for each ISO1044?

Thanks,
Abhijith

  • Hello Abhijith,

It is okay to power both ISO1044s are using one isolated power supply. No issues from the device standpoint. Two power supplies would only be recommended if the CAN bus 1 and CAN bus 2 need to be isolated from each other.

The ISO1044 will have an ICC2 of 70mA (peak) in the worst cases. The isolated power supply should be able to support greater than twice 70mA in order to support both isolators.

SN6505 and is usually a good, isolated power solution to start with.

    Best,
    Andrew
