ISOM8110: 10 KV isolation!!!

Hi guys,

I read data sheet of ISOM8110, it says that it can give 5KV isolation. My question is can I achieve 10KV isolation by using 2 ISOM8110 is series ??
My application I want to give 10KV isolation in between USB port and device.

    Pritam,

    Unfortunately, no this is not how the isolation barrier works. For starters, there is no specified isolation stacking method that could validate the barrier voltage, and no characterization with a series configuration has been done, so the data would not be reliable even if it were possible. Another factor is the voltage distribution between the two devices would be uncontrolled, and not work as just a double 5kV barrier.

    Can you specify what exactly you need the isolation for? I know it's between a USB port and device, but why 10kV? I want to make sure we're looking at the correct parameter to choose the optimal device for your system.

    Hi Eric,

    We are developing insulation tester. And we want to claim that we can give 10KV isolation between usb c port and our device for data communication and charging so that our device can be operated on USB power when battery is fully drained.

    Pritam,

    Okay, thank you for the information, but is there a reason you went with an opto-emulator rather than something like a digital isolator?

    Hi Eric,

    No reason. I'm just searching for isolation and found this. Do you have any better idea then please share.

    Pritam,

    We have isolation devices specifically for USB, but can you share a block diagram of your intended application? Or a connection diagram to better understand what and where needs to be isolated?

    Hi Eric,

    Please refer to the schematic above. We are using an opto-coupler, but we are only able to achieve isolation up to 2KV.

    Hi Pritam,

    As Eric already mentioned that stacking is not a valid option to increase isolation rating.

    Just FYI, we do have Isolated USB solutions which can provide up to 5700Vrms VISO(as per UL) which can possibly eliminate the need of using optos for isolation in above schematic.

    Just to be clear here, which Isolation specification as per the datasheet are you looking to be 10KV - Is it VISO or VIOWM or VIMP etc.?

    Hi varun,

    is it for VISO, means 10KV isolation upto 1 minute.

    Hi Pritam,

    Thanks for the confirmation.

    Currently, there is no available standard IC isolation product that meets a 10kV RMS UL1577 requirement.
