ISOW1050: Split Termination Testing

Part Number: ISOW1050

Team,

In the ISOW1050 d/s, it says the split termination can be used in the Fig8-3 CAN BUS Termination Concepts. However, there is no test circuit, and rising/falling time parameters spcified in the d/s and EC table. Only the standard termination testing info. is seen in the Fig6-7.

Is there possible to get it with split termination approach? Thanks.

  • Hi Brian,

The ISOW1050 or any CAN device's datasheet does not provide a dedicated test circuit or separate rise/fall time specifications for the split termination configuration. The driver timing parameters in the electrical characteristics table — tR (typ. 26 ns) and tF (typ. 42 ns) — are characterized exclusively with the standard termination setup: RL = 60 Ω, CL = 100 pF. The test circuit used for these measurements is shown in Figure 6-3.

Why separate split-termination timing specs are not provided:

In a split termination network (two 60 Ω resistors in series with a capacitor to ground at the midpoint), the DC equivalent load seen by the driver is still 120 Ω per termination node (same as standard). The added capacitor (typically 4.7 nF–100 nF) filters common-mode noise but does not significantly alter the differential signal rise/fall times, since the capacitor appears as a common-mode path to ground, not a differential load. Therefore, the rise/fall time values measured under the standard 60 Ω / 100 pF test conditions are expected to be same for split termination as well.

In summary, dedicated split-termination rise/fall time specs and test circuits are not available in any CAN device datasheet in whole industry. The timing parameters under standard termination is applicable to the differential signal behavior with split termination.
