ISO35 Replacement of ADM2484E

Hi

We want to replace ADM2484E with TI isolated RS485 transceiver.

We think about ISO35 but there is problem for replacement.

ADM2484E shows 5000 V rms isolation voltage for 1 minute per UL1577 as UL recognition.

According to the datasheet, ISO35 has UL recognition but it shows 2500 VRMS Isolation Rating per UL 1577.

Is ISO35 inferior as compared with ADM2484E?

It seems to be difficult to replace ADM2484E.

Do you have recommendation?

  • Hello Na Na,

The most common reason for using Isolation for RS-485 interface is to reduce Ground Potential Difference (GPD), if this is the reason you also want to use Isolated RS-485 then a few 100Vs is sufficient to achieve this. If there reason for using Isolation is also to protect your system from EMC events like ESD, EFT & Surge then based on the amount of protection required a minimum level of isolation voltage is required. Could you please let us know what is your end application requirement? Accordingly I can suggest if 2.5kV is sufficient or you would need 5kV.

If 5kV is the requirement then you can also use a digital isolator ISO7821/ISO7841 or ISO7721/ISO7741 along with a non-isolated RS-485 transceiver to achieve 5kV Isolated RS-485.
