ISO1176: Current-limiting circuit

Part Number: ISO1176

Hi,

Based on the ISO1176 Datasheet it's not clear whether it has a built-in current-limiting circuit or not.

If not, am I correct to assume the maximum safety supply current is 157 mA (pg. 19)?

    Hi Gabriel,

    ISO1176 do not have built-in current-limiting circuit.

    The SAFETY LIMITING VALUES section of the ISO1176 datasheet claims that if an external event damages either the input or output of the ISO1176 then such external event could leave behind a low resistance current path from the input/output to ground or VCC.
    After this external event damages the ISO1176 and leaves behind a low resistance current path, if there is an external source forcing current into (or sinking current out from) the ISO1176 such current flow will increase the temperature of the die.
    If such current flow is unlimited or “high enough”, then the die temperature can potentially increase beyond the absolute maximum ratings of the ISO1176 and consequently, the isolation barrier can fail.

    So in system design you need to limit the maximum current supply <157mA.
