For one of my projects,I am planning to make a 5v,isolated power supply using SN6501.

While I can use the ready made transformer, I was wondering if I can get the details of the transformer like, the core part number,Py,&sec winding details.

The idea is to contain the cost, because my isolation requirements are not very stringent.

    Hi VTC,

    Fortunately there is not a requirement for materials in a transformer used with the SN650x family of devices. The specifications it must meet are appropriate turns ratio and V-t product. Iron cores are common, and the primary/secondary winding material can be decided which best meets your isolation needs, including cost effectiveness. For 5V:5V operation, please do give the transformer a ~1:1.3  turns ratio between primary and secondary sides and a V-t product > 9.1Vus.

    If cost is a concern, there are many isolation transformer manufacturers that TI has not noted yet. If there is a particular device or transformer vendor you would like to use in your system, please let me know and we can determine whether it is a good fit.

    Thanks for your reply.

    As I saw the frequency of stated  operation of SN 6501 is  300- 410- 620 khz I was thinking it would need a special toroid core or similar .

    Can I know the specific core that could be used.

    Also what would be 1:1.3 winding ratio.

    Does it mean say 3:4.

    As for as the insulation is concerned as our isolation requirements would not beyond 1kv,would Tripple Insulated Wires  used in normal SMPS power supplies be not sufficient.

    Hi VTC,

    Isolation transformers may have specific cores inside, but the toroid shape is common in most devices. Unfortunately, TI does not specialize in magnetics, so our aid is limited in this Field.

    Since lower resistivity = lower core losses, an inexpensive but low resistivity ceramic ferrite like Manganese-Zinc (MnZn) can be chosen. I do not have a part number to recommend; my apologies.

    Triple insulated wire can also be used, and if it is typically for SMPS, please confirm on the wire's datasheet that it can meet the 1kV isolation requirement, and it should be acceptable. A turns ratio of 3:4 is similar to 1:1.3, so this is also okay. Please follow best transformer winding practices and if you can share parameters of a finished transformer, we can verify its compatibility with the SN6501.

    Hi VTC,

    Hopefully all is well. Has a transformer prototype been tested? In case it is saturating, using our SN6505B instead of the SN6501 will help prevent this due to its higher switching frequency and controllable clock. The device's internal current limit will also yield a more robust solution.
