SN6505A-Q1: Transformer size, EMI

Part Number: SN6505A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN6505B-Q1, , SN6505A, SN6505B

Hi,

Now, PCB size is small, What is the minimum size of transformer? SN6505A-Q1,SN6505B-Q1,

output current is small ,200mA.

SN6505A-Q1,SN6505B-Q1, differentoperating frequency, which EMI will be easier to deal with?any good Suggestions?

Thanks!

  • Hi Neal,

There is a list of recommended transformers in the SN6505A/B datasheet (see page 25). It looks like the smallest we recommend is 6.7 x 10 x 4.2 mm but that is only for 100mA.

For 200mA, perhaps this transformer from Bourns would be the smallest: HCT-SM-1.3-8-2

There may be other transformers that will work well with SN6505A/B that are smaller, but we have not fully tested them. Is this transformer small enough for your application?

Both SN6505A and SN6505B have very good EMI performance due to their slew rate control of the output switch voltage and through Spread Spectrum Clocking. If EMI is of great concern, I think the SN6505A may be better as the switching frequency is a bit lower (160kHz vs. 420kHz). If you do use SN6505A you may need to again reconsider the transformer selected as you will require a higher V x T product (which usually comes at the cost of size).

    Best regards,

    Dan
