ISO1042-Q1: Layout

Part Number: ISO1042-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1042, SN6501

Hi,

I have designed isolated CAN using ISO6501, ISO1042 and Pulse transformer.

For space saving and better track routing I have put transformer on one side of the PCB and ISO1042 on other side of the PCB.

Complete solution is tested ok on bench. But yet to release to customer.

Transformer and IC mounted back to back.. Is it a good method?

Do we foresee any functional performance issues in future due to transformer switching frequency on CAN IC as its exactly sitting on top of it?

  • Hi Rami,

Thank you for posting to E2E! We do not expect any issues from having an isolation transformer and SN6501 on the opposite side of a PCB from ISO1042. Since CAN signals are differential, they are able to reject noise by design. Can you share oscilloscope images of bench tests that were conducted?

Please confirm the isolation barrier is consistent on all layers of the PCB, and if you would like, we can review the schematics / PCB layout via Personal Message or I can reach out to you at the email address associated with your myTI account.

    Respectfully,
    Manuel Chavez

  • Hi Rami,

We have continued discussions on this topic within the Isolation team, and although RF immunity for ISO1042 is strong, the worst case scenario here could result in bit errors due to the electromagnetic field from the switching transformer.

We don't expect any issues, and we do recommend this is tested thoroughly in the system with the design in its final-product form.

Please let us know if you have additional questions.

    Thank you,
    Manuel Chavez

  • Thanks a lot for the detailed information.

I couldn't verify full functionality of CAN communication section due to covid-19 lockdown.

I will get back to you incase I have any further queries
