SN6505B: Can the SN6501 be readily replaced with the SN6505B?

I am planning to use reference design TIDA-01605 as part of an upcoming project. It uses the SN6501 to generate supply voltages for the gate drivers. I have previously been using SN6505Bs for this on other projects and have a number in stock. From what I can tell, the SN6505 would perform the same role with the convenient addition of an ENABLE pin and increased current handling capability.

Are there any significant differences between these devices that could lead to an expensive mistake? Lastly, can you confirm that I could continue to use the same transformer as in the refernce design for the same output voltage?

    Hi Euan,

    Thank you for posting to E2E! SN6505B (with appropriate connections) is expected to safely replace SN6501 in the majority of applications.

    Although we cannot guarantee there will not be issues in an end application, SN6505B has integrated safety features that SN6501 does not, like over-current protection, thermal shutdown, and soft-start to reduce inrush currents, making SN6505 devices more robust than SN6501.

    SN6505B also has a faster minimum internal oscillator switching frequency, so it is compatible with the same transformers as SN6501 and additional ones. If you'd like us to confirm transformer compatibility, please feel free to share the part number or datasheet.

    Hi Manuel,

    Thanks for your quick reply. I was planning to duplicate exactly the circuit from the reference design, but using the SN6505B instead of the SN6501. I've included the circuit for easy reference.

    I am planning on using the exact same transformer suggested - the Wurth Elektronik 750343725. I hope that this will still work correctly with the SN6505B to produce the same +15/-4V output voltages?

    You're welcome! Thanks for confirming this schematic. Yes, this transformer and circuit is expected to operate properly with SN6505B replacing SN6501, including the added benefits of higher current-sinking capabilities, spread spectrum / external clocking, device protection features, and the other improvements that come with using SN6505.
