SN74AVC16244: What is the technology family mean

Part Number: SN74AVC16244
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74AXC8T245, SN74LVCH16541A, SN74LVCH16244A, SN74ALVCH16244, SN74ALVCH162244, SN74LVCH162244A, SN74AXC4T774

Hi expert,

Could you please kindly help to explain the meaning of technology family?

My customer is wondering that why there are different technology families and what is the meaning of it. Besides, what are the differences between different technology families? Thank you.

  • Hello Zirui,

Could you please kindly help to explain the meaning of technology family?

Logic encompasses many functions -- buffers, inverters, gates (AND, OR, XOR, etc), encoders, decoders, among many others. The logic family allows an engineer to identify similar functions based on the same technology very easily. The devices in a logic family will all perform very similarly.

Unfortunately, I would be here all day if I was going to explain every difference with every family - we're talking about over 50 years of design and improvement of logic. You can see many unique families explained in this application report: Logic Guide

It looks like you have selected two devices from not only different logic families (AVC vs AXC), but from different functions (16244 vs 8T245). One is a dual supply translator while the other is just a buffer. AXC is a very new logic family, developed in the last 5 years, while AVC is older. Both are good solutions depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

What is the application? Can we help you select a device to use?

  • Hi Maler

Thanks and I have asked customer what features they are looking for and could you please kindly help to find the devices for them?

The 1st one is 16-channels high speed buffers with bus-hold and 3-state outputs (application is similar with SN74ALVCH162244DGGR). The supply voltage (Min) must be not greater than 1.65V, and the supply voltage (Max) is best between 2.5-3.6V. The 1st one is used as output buffer with voltage level shift in the analog to digital data converter.

The 2nd one is dual-supply bus transceiver with configurable voltage translation (application is similar with SN74AXC8T245). The 2nd on is used as voltage translation in the SPI.

    1. the number of bits is best between 4-8bits. High input voltage (Min) is not greater than 1V, high input voltage (Max) is best between 2.5-3.6V.
    2. The output voltage (Min) is not greater than 1V, output voltage (Max) is best between 2.5-3.6V.
    3. Dats rate is best greater than 200Mbps.

These two devices is best from the same technology family. Could you please help me find out the best options? Thank you!

  • "2244" devices (SN74LVCH162244A, SN74ALVCH162244) have damping resistors at the outputs. This might be useful as source termination for long traces. Otherwise, use a "244" device like the SN74LVCH16244A or SN74ALVCH16244. Consider the SN74LVCH16541A for a more convenient pinout.

An AXC device like the SN74AXC8T245 is the best choice for translating SPI. If you have four signals, consider the SN74AXC4T774.

In general, translators use different families; there is no reason to try to match them with other buffers.
